Breakfast at my house is usually quite an event. I do two breakfasts every morning. I know, right?! It starts before the sun comes up, when my husband usually has a protein shake or protein bar before heading off for PT. Shortly after he leaves, my dear middle child comes bounding down the stairs announcing his breakfast request. It is usually oatmeal, cereal, yogurt, fruit, something that doesn't require a lot of thought on my part. Because I am basically useless before some coffee.

We have been having a PANCAKE PARTY at our house lately. The wonderful folks at IHOP at Home® sent over not one, not two, but FIVE different IHOP at Home® Syrups for me to review. It was awesome! As you all know breakfast time for us is not simply a morning affair. I suppose you could say it is more like a ritual-one that reflects family, togetherness and gathering, no matter the time of day. With our crazy schedules we tend to save the more extravagant breakfast for evening meals or the weekends. That way we all get to cook together in the kitchen, giggling as we play musical spatulas, trying our best not to drip batter as we dance around the kitchen.  Read more

I don’t know about you, but my family and I enjoy going to IHOP from time to time for what we call “Breakinner”. It’s breakfast for dinner! So when I had the chance to try out their new IHOP at Home® Syrup line you can purchase at your local grocery store, I jumped at it! When we are dining in the restaurant, my boys (and my husband) love to try all the different syrups they have. I’m not much of a sweets person, so give me a little of the basic maple syrup, and I’m good.

When i was asked to review IHOP at Home® Syrups i immediately said yes. we are a breakfast loving family! i make waffles and craig makes pancakes. not on the same days, of course, but those are each of our specialties. i very rarely attempt pancakes on my own, and i have never heard of craig making waffles. it's one of his favorite meals. our entire married life he has made his mother's recipe for homemade pancakes.

Before I start, can I just interject something here? Wait, why am I asking? Who's actually going to interrupt my blog post to say, "NO! You can't interject!"? Anyway, in recent years I have become an Apple product junkie, and I have a very hard time NOT writing "IHOP" like "iHop". Okay, interjection over. My husband and I are big believers in the adage, "The family that eats together, stays together." I know, I know, not quite the same ring as "prays together, stays together", but it's so true!

Our mornings usually start out pretty lazily. Well, lazy for the kids and me. The husband wakes up bright and early at 5am and is out the door by 5:30. Poor guy. The kids and I tend to sleep in (one of the perks of homeschooling, you know) and just grab breakfast (usually cereal or oatmeal) before we start our school day. The weekends, however, are a whole different matter. We still keep things lazy, and we certainly don't set any alarms for Saturday morning. Most Saturdays involve the kids torturing their daddy awake with wet-willies and violent piggy back rides.

Rooty Tooty Fresh and…OH YEAH! Mornings during the school year are crazy at our house. Getting four kids up and out the door without crying, hiding under the bed, threatening to run away from home, or pulling out all my hair is a daily struggle between what I want to do and what I HAVE to do. Because let’s face it. As soon as they’re gone I have the entire house to myself FOR SEVEN HOURS. That right there, my friends, is enough motivation for me to just keep my head down, stay focused, and get them out the door as fast as possible.

I love breakfast for dinner, and I especially love omelets and pancakes. We make all kinds of pancakes - chocolate chip pancakes, pumpkin pie pancakes, carrot cake pancakes, apple ring pancakes, bananas foster pancakes, and baked pancakes. They are a perfect breakfast or dinner (or lunch, I suppose) because they're quick and easy, and paired with eggs or ham and some fruit, they make for a satisfying and filling meal. At home, we make pancakes and eggs for dinner often.

If you want to make Alexis squeal with delight, ask her if she wants breakfast for dinner. "YEEESSSSSSS!" she'll say. Always. It's such a shame she's so hard to please. As we pulled into our neighborhood a few nights ago, I figured it would be a perfect evening for an easy dinner. "Alexis, do you want pancakes or French toast for dinner?" I asked. She grinned so big she couldn't let any words out. Finally, she stammered, "Pan...umm...FRENCH TOAST!" "PLEASE!" "...AND CAN I HAVE BLUEBERRY SYRUP?"

We have a long tradition of Sunday brunch at this house. Now that time has passed, add in the sports of competitive swimming with appetites like locusts. Locusts, I tell you, and suddenly ten waffles are never enough. You think your teenager eats a ton? I'm right there with y'all now. I just cannot keep enough food on the table. Yep, our family of five usually requires TRIPLE batches of pancakes, waffles, and French toast.

I am a die-hard cook, but I am NOT a morning person. So while I love breakfast foods, they have to be fairly easy or else they're beyond the capabilities of my morning personality. Recently, I read an article with the stunning news that made-from-scratch pancake batter was absolutely no better (or even significantly cheaper) than buying pancake mix in a box. This, my friends, was NEWS! Pancakes for everyone! And IHOP at Home®'s new line of syrups (graciously sent for me to test out) to go on top!
